Josephine Baker, Dalida, Jean-Paul Gauthier, Ben Harper… All those international artists have already performed on the stage of the now world wide famous concert hall. Yet, when it opened, the “Folies” didn’t delight everyone in Paris. The name “Folies” used to refer to concert halls since the end of the 18th century, those “pleasure houses” much appreciated by the higher gentry who was coming to see concerts, shows, ballets and other night parties.
And when this new “Folies” were built near the Grands Boulevards, they needed a name. “Trévise”, “Richer” or “Geoffroy-Marie” were excluded since they were family names and the Duke of Trévise for example strictly refused to be associated to a concert hall. So the “rue Bergère”, close by, finally inspired the place.
It opened with great pomp on the 2nd of May 1869, welcoming all Parisians up for parties around cafés, concerts and theatre plays. The very first years started slowly but decade after decade, the Folies became one of the major Parisian stages. After more than 150 years of show now, the story goes on.
